A Love Letter to the Human Experience

I walk in the wellness and spiritual world every day. It’s my day job. I love my work, and I’m passionate about what I do. I love my customers, my coworkers, and the minutiae of retail when dedicated to something greater. My job is to aid in your self-healing process, being an extra set of eyes and hands, a gentle suggestion or listening ear, as you navigate this human lifetime. After spending my days in ritual, in study, immersed in the world of crystals, Tarot, sound healing, essential oils, the “woo-woo”… I often grab good ol’ Springfield style Chinese food on my way home and crash on the couch with my bong and the next episode of Bojack Horseman. It’s called balance. And that, my friend, is the whole point of this human experience in a nutshell.

From what I understand, in my limited human understanding, we are always pushing forward in a grand evolutionary journey. We are hard-wired for improvement, for progression, for a gradual uphill climb motivated by our very genetics. We can always find ways to be un-satisfied with our current situation, and can alchemize this for our own good. We improve our situation. We grow as a person. And I believe that we have been doing this for many lifetimes, and we have many more ahead of us, all in service of our soul’s evolutionary journey. With each lifetime comes new lessons, new circumstances; shit, even new species! It’s our natural instinct to evolve and grow, and that can lead to a lot of pressure to be “better,” and to always be improving. Just like the Earth has evolved to be more advanced and sustain more life, so do we evolve to keep up.

Imagine this: your soul is more than this skin suit you wear. Your soul is a non-local energy living inside of a physical chemical body made up of meat and bone and matter. This soul is also not your mind/ego. The mind is not quite the physical body, it is something separate, yet deeply enmeshed in the signals and communication of the body. Disconnect can happen anywhere within this tri-fold being, and part of the human experience is this navigation between the three.

Your soul has existed long before this physical body and the mind/ego. Your soul is your little “chunk” of the Divine: your own special individual experience. We are here to each have a unique, special, and deeply felt experience that is entirely yours, and yours alone. Then, when your evolution as a soul is complete, you get to take that experience back and become One again, uniting every single soul experience back into One being: The Universe. It’s in the name. The word Universe is derived from the old Latin word universus, meaning ‘combined into one’.

This experience of our soul splitting off and separating from being just One universal being together with all the other souls, to have an individualized and unique human life, is what I believe to be the entire point of our existence. We are here to experience. Period. That’s it. Good, bad, joyful, sad, funny, horrifying, all of it. Your individual experience is the entire point of your existence. Afterall, if the Universe never had experiences, if it just sat there and did nothing, it would have no substance, no life. Therefore, the One being/Universe had to have experiences as individual beings in order to have substance. We each have our own individual “mission” or “calling” in our individual lifetimes, but that’s between you and Universe. This idea that our only “requirement” is to just deeply experience human-ness sure takes a lot of pressure off of the whole idea that we’re here for some grand gigantic mission, besides the grand gigantic mission that you choose to make your life. It’s up to you.

So many people who are walking the path of spirituality and religion focus all their energy and time on what is happening after this lifetime ends. Nuns and priests devote their entire lives in service to holiness. Christians talk of denying the desires of the flesh to enter the kingdom of heaven after we die. I grew up in an extremely religious household where my elders often expressed that we were only here on this Earth for a short while, to deny our humanness, and to wait patiently for God to call you home to eternity. Like this Earth was a sort of purgatory, a punishment for being separated from God in our humanness. That was reflected in my upbringing. I often felt like I was being punished for my existence, and that my only respite would be when I died and went to heaven. How. FUCKING. Depressing!!

I’m sad to say that I often see those on the spiritual path echoing that same sort of purgatory story. They say that they must “transcend” their humanness, to raise their vibration high enough that they might somehow float away from the pain of human existence. They spend their short lifetimes denying themselves the full pleasure of the human experience, trying to meditate the human urges away. They deny their human emotions, trying desperately to cling to an unattainable standard of “high vibration” so they can escape their humanness and “get to the spiritual stuff already.” That’s not the fucking point!!

The soul’s evolutionary journey has been mapped and studied by several different spiritual authors and channellers, and while I could postulate on the many theories and speculations I have on the exact science and trajectory of the soul’s evolution (and I often do, that’ll just have to wait for another time) I’d rather focus on one thing I do know about the soul: I chose to be a human for this particular lifetime. I chose to experience the messy, painful, expressive, curious, and often confusing world of humanity. If I chose this, it must have been for a good reason. If I’m here, it must be for a reason. I’m not going to waste my precious human lifetime trying to escape the very thing that I chose to experience as a part of my souls evolution. This human life IS the point.

My soul has been many things before, I assume, and it will be many more things in many more lifetimes ahead of me, but for now, all I can see and experience and know is this human lifetime, right here, right now. That’s all I have. And goddamnit, I’m going to enjoy it. That’s my choice! I’m gonna go out dancing, I’m gonna eat the occasional junk food, hit the vape every once in a while, get rip-roaring stoned, and listen to raunchy music because I LIKE IT! Obviously I care for my physical health and do these things in moderation, but denying myself the simple pleasures of existence for no reason is dumb, and I’m not doing it anymore. We are here to experience, and I choose to experience pleasure, ease, joy, and FUN!

If you’re what I call a “helper”, your calling in this life might be to help other humans. I’m a helper, I’m here to create a community space and provide easily accessible spiritual tools that are ethically sourced. I have many friends who are each here in their own unique way to help raise the collective vibration of the planet. Some are herbalists, some are yoga teachers, crystal healers, therapists, nurses. We are surrounded by helpers. Many helpers started off as people who were drowning and desperately needed help themselves. When they were able to steady their circumstances, they turned back around and offered a helping hand to the next person coming up behind them.

We are here, as helpers, in service of Love. We are here to give a hand to those who are needing one. We walk hard paths and go through difficult circumstances so that we know how to turn around and pull our fellow humans up with us. We live our lives in service to humanity, not trying to escape it. When you view the human experience as punishment, it’s easy to turn a blind eye on those in need, saying maybe they deserve it. When you view the human experience as a neutral opportunity for each individual soul to have a unique view of the Universe, it leaves more room for love and patience and acceptance of our fellow humans. As helpers, we dedicate our lives to the service of Loving humanity, and doing what we can to spread Love while we’re here having our human experience as well.

This experience we are having, the HUMAN experience, is a short and fleeting gift. This is the only phase in the evolution of our soul when we have the chance to interact with other bits of the Universe as if we are not truly just One big energy that exists in everything. Before we were humans, we were elements, plants, and animals, and we didn’t quite have the levels of consciousness required to enjoy life and experience it as an individual. After our human lifetimes, we transcend the physical body, and while we may gain great spiritual knowledge and wisdom, we no longer experience the Earthly physical pleasures of life, like sex and cannabis. We exist in this beautiful perfect balance of the physical world and the spiritual world: a spiritual being having a human experience.

When we reach the point in our soul’s evolution where we become human, we choose to split off from the One unity conciousness, forget that we are all One, in order to have the full spectrum of the human experience and to fully immerse ourselves in this life. We choose to separate so that we can have the beautiful experience of coming crashing back together in love by choice. We are not having this human experience as punishment. This is not purgatory. We are not broken. This life we are experiencing is not something to escape from, to try to patiently wait out. We are here to LIVE!

When you see that the point is to just be your unique and individual self, it becomes difficult to judge others for being different. We should be celebrating our differences, because those differences are ultimately what give us our unique purpose. The pressure is off: there is no cheat code to existence, no secret answer that holds our “purpose” for life: we’re here to experience. To love. To create. To express. To figure out what it means to be YOU. We chose to be this cool little human with individual needs and wants and dreams, and to experience this life through this very unique lens.

We forget, in this world where we have somehow created debt and pain and war when we could have chosen nature, connection, and peace, that we are not meant to live out the same dull pattern of this capitalist machine. We were meant to be deeply sensual and creative beings. How can we live expansive and meaningful lives when so many of us are trapped in the cage of eatsleepworkeatsleepworkeatsleepworkeatsleepwork day after day? I think this is part of the puzzle of this lifetime, and we will each have to come to our own conclusion: how do we truly live? We have to intentionally carve out space for our self-expression. We will never be this version of ourselves again, and if we don’t do much experiencing in this lifetime, we’ll just keep coming back and reincarnating here until we have a full spectrum of experience.

We have a duty to experience our lives to its fullest potential, to have a wide and deeply lived experience. For some, that may mean you raise kids and pour your entire heart into the devotion and experience of raising a family. For others, that may be dedicating your life to travelling and experiencing every lifestyle you’re able to find. For me, right now at least, my experience is running a cute retail shop that allows me to interact with fascinating people and create beautiful items that make my heart fill with joy. Everyone’s life will look completely unique and special, and thats the whole fucking point

We do not exist to worship a vengeful God and deny our human pleasures for the sake of holiness. We do not exist to try and “fit in” and be just like everyone else. Our human desires, dare I say it, are the whole point of existence. We are here to EXPERIENCE LIFE!! We are here to eat good food, to play, to kiss, to have glorious and delicious sex, to fight and argue, to laugh until we cry, to experience love and loss so deeply and simultaneously that you fear it may rip you in half; this is the human experience. We are here to wrestle with grand ideas, to dream of bigger possibilities, and to also be devastated by the unexpected, and by the injustices we see happening around us. We are here to have fingers that can intertwine with other fingers, and toes that squish mud, and lips that smile and make words. We are here to eat delicious jellies and desserts and not give a damn how our thighs look in our jeans. Experience pleasure, darling, it’s the whole point of being a human.

The concept of existing purely for the sake of pleasure and love was life-altering for me, and I hope you experience life a little richer now because of this shift. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to be a high-achiever. As long as you’re able to access happiness, that’s enough. As long as you’re able to move in love, that’s enough. We’re all just here to see what happens, might as well have fun while you’re at it.

I love you. I hope you take the time to enjoy today.
